Radical Windows renewal with AI agents functioning alongside the user
15:27, 08.10.2026
In the coming months, Microsoft plans to radically transform Windows. The plan involves using artificial intelligence agents alongside regular users so that Copilot has the owner’s permission to access local files and all recent activity to perform the necessary tasks.
Key details about the new project
The security of the AI agents will be based on Microsoft Execution Containers (MXC). This approach will help isolate the environment for AI agents while they are running. Windows provides access to various levels of isolation at the virtual machine, individual process, Windows 365, or WSL levels. MXC support is already available for LM Studio, GitHub Copilot, OpenAI Codex, Replit, OpenClaw, OpenShell, and others. Meta’s Muse AI agent is also expected to launch soon.
Computational processes are distributed between the cloud and the computer, a concept known as “hybrid intelligence.” To run local models, Windows ML will be used to distribute resources among the graphics processing unit (GPU), central processing unit (CPU), and neural processing units. Intelligent routing is also available to choose between cloud-based and on-premises models.
On AI-enabled PCs, Copilot will be able to view file contents, review recent PC activity, and perform tasks such as troubleshooting, diagnostics, and accessing local AI. Autopilot AI will run continuously.
Core Windows features are being updated. The search app on the taskbar can now perform tasks even without opening the settings. Copilot will be available in search, so users will be able to get answers without even launching the Copilot app.
