Western Digital is betting big on hard drives again, and this time the ambition goes far beyond modest upgrades. The company has introduced two fresh technologies for 3.5-inch HDDs that aim to change how you think about speed and scale. The first is Dual Pivot. Instead of one actuator moving the read and write heads, WD adds a second independently controlled one. This simple sounding change brings serious gains. Dual Pivot also lays the groundwork for High Bandwidth Drives. This approach lets several heads read and write data at the same time on different tracks. WD already talks about twice the bandwidth today and hints at much more tomorrow. Combined with Dual Pivot, the company sees a path to four times higher sequential performance as capacities grow. Long term plans include up to 10 TB per platter and as many as 14 platters in one drive. In theory, that points toward 140 TB. In practice, WD targets 100 TB HDDs by around 2029, powered by HAMR technology.
