A New Era of “Flexible” Electronics: China Develops A Fiber-Processor

Chinese scientists have invented a functional processor in the form of an elastic thread. This opens new possibilities in the production of smart clothing that can support neural networks and perform complex computations.
Creation Process
The fiber-processor is based on the method of producing fiber-integrated circuits (FIC).
This method involves two key steps: forming a microchip on a flexible base and rolling the finished board into a tight tube, resembling a scroll. This produces a strong thread about 0.5 mm thick.
Despite its tiny size, up to 100,000 transistors can be placed on each square centimeter, and the bending of the thread does not affect its functionality. If such threads are woven into fabric, the number of transistors per meter could reach several million, equivalent to the power of traditional processors.
Durability and Functionality
This invention proved to be very durable. Tests showed that the thread maintains full functionality even after:
- Stretching its length by 30%;
- 10,000 stretching cycles;
- Bending the thread 180° with a 1 cm radius of curvature.
Future Integration
The creators envision that in the future, such fibers could be used to create smart sensors, flexible displays, and portable computers resistant to moisture, cold, heat, and deformation.
