Research by VU University Amsterdam shows that there is a high probability that by 2025, AI's energy demand could exceed global mining energy consumption in 2024.
Research by the VU Institute for Environmental Studies
According to a new study, it has become known that the energy consumption of AI systems this year could reach 23 GW, and water consumption could reach 764.6 billion liters. Thus, energy consumption exceeds last year's mining, and the volume of water used is comparable to the annual use of bottled water.
It is impossible to calculate accurate data on electricity consumption, as large tech giants do not disclose their resource consumption reports. To analyze AI equipment and energy consumption, the researcher used publicly available information from accessible analytical reports. The scientist estimated that annual emissions from the use of AI systems could range from 32 to 79 million tons.
This information alarmed certain US lawmakers, resulting in an official request being sent to seven large companies demanding that they disclose information about AI energy consumption.
