Behind the scenes of Jalapeno’s Development: AI tripled the production process

OpenAI’s Vice President of Hardware shared some details about the development of the Jalapeno AI chip. Broadcom specialists were also involved in the development process, and the overall experience can significantly benefit the semiconductor industry.

Insights into the development process

During the chip design phase, the active use of AI significantly reduced the time frame from the standard 18-24 months to only nine months. Such an approach has tremendously sped up all the processes, but it hasn’t actually replaced the work of engineers. That’s why, all the future OpenAI projects might be conducted way faster due to the relay on the existing design and AI technology.

Jalapeno is designed to improve overall efficiency and minimize latency when processing requests. Also, this chip should perform exceptionally well with AI models of various vendors. Internal demand for computer resources at OpenAI is so high that external customers won’t get access to the new chip for a long time.

OpenAI is ready to share gained experience with other market participants. The company is also planning to continue using AMD and Nvidia components for its future projects. The main aim here is to deliver optimal performance at a reasonable cost level.
