GitHub competitor from Cursor – new code hosting service
14:45, 18.08.2026
Recently, Cursor has introduced Origin – a new built-in repository hosting service that offers the possibility of viewing, storing, and managing code. This is the initial step in the creation of the GitHub alternative, which is predominantly focused on development using AI.
Origin is now available in beta testing for all users with paid Cursor plans. As of now, there are basic features available such as pull requests, GitHub synchronization, code viewing, and some others.
How to manage repositories?
Repository management is done via the Codebase tab. For the creation of the repository, you should click +New and specify the needed name. After that, users are given instructions for the CLI. The name of the initial repository becomes part of the URL of all the subsequent codebases for a certain user.
Here are some additional details about the new project:
- Synchronization with GitHub. Origin offers a possibility for repositories to coexist in both GitHub and Origin. That means anyone with write and read access in GitHub automatically gains access to view synced repositories.
- Code reviews and pull requests. Each repository in Origin has a pull request system with commits, timeline, reviews, and lists of changed files. For synced repositories, such requests work in both directions.
- AI agents in every repository. The major idea of the new project is to unite pull requests, code, and AI agents in a single space. An agent can create a new branch, update pull requests, make changes, or just give answers.
- Extensions and integrations. There are already available integrations with Depot, Vercel, and Buildkite.
