Microsoft has announced the migration of the GitHub platform to Azure servers. Reports indicate that the GitHub team has paused new feature development to focus entirely on the migration to Microsoft’s infrastructure.

Why GitHub is leaving its data centers

According to an internal memo from the Chief Technology Officer, GitHub has faced capacity limitations in one of its data centers — a signal to explore new infrastructure solutions. Vladimir Fedorov, GitHub’s CTO, stated that Azure is the way forward.

The migration plan spans 24 months, with 18 months dedicated to the main process and a six-month buffer period (for at least half a year, GitHub will operate in parallel on both old and new infrastructure).

According to the team, the move will help improve the stability and availability of the repository for millions of developers.

Community concerns

Some developers have reacted cautiously to the announcement. GitHub has long been seen as a symbol of independence and a cornerstone of the open-source ecosystem.

Additionally, experts are concerned that migrating core systems may increase the risk of temporary outages.
