A global RAM shortage is forcing tech giants to get creative. According to Nikhil Cherian, Senior Director of Supply Chain Infrastructure at Google Cloud, the company has begun extracting DDR4 modules from decommissioned servers to give them a second life in modern AI systems.

To integrate previous-generation components into new equipment, Google built custom hardware adapters.
The initiative is driven by new spikes in DRAM prices. According to TrendForce analysts, server RAM prices jumped 13–18%, while the PC segment saw increases of up to 23%. In August, prices for 8GB DDR4 and DDR5 modules reached $142 and $133, respectively.
Rising prices and memory shortages are forcing tech companies to find ways to squeeze more out of every GB.
