Intel’s Next Desktop Monster Could Pack 28 Cores and 144MB of Cache

Intel’s next desktop generation is starting to look much more interesting. A leaked specification sheet reportedly reveals seven Nova Lake-S processors, with the flagship Core Ultra 9 4970K BFC sitting at the top.
According to the leak, the chip could feature 28 cores and 28 threads. The configuration includes 8 performance cores, 16 efficiency cores, and 4 low-power efficiency cores. Intel could also give the processor up to 144MB of additional bLLC cache.
That cache figure deserves attention. Intel appears to be preparing BFC versions with a much larger cache pool, potentially giving gamers and demanding users a serious performance boost. The company could use this approach to challenge AMD’s cache-heavy gaming processors.
The Core Ultra 9 4950K reportedly keeps the same 28-core layout but drops the extra cache. Meanwhile, Core Ultra 7 models could offer 24 cores, while Core Ultra 5 chips may settle at 22 cores.
Intel Could Be Preparing a New Battle for High-End PCs
The leaked lineup also points to a 125W power rating for most of the higher-end chips. One interesting exception is the Core Ultra 9 4900 BFC, which reportedly targets 65W.
Nova Lake is expected to arrive on the LGA 1954 platform, with Z990 and Z970 motherboards. Intel could unveil the first desktop models around CES 2027. More powerful dual-tile versions with up to 52 cores may follow later.
Our take
If these specifications prove accurate, Intel could make the CPU market much more competitive. The 144MB cache option is especially intriguing because it could give Intel a stronger position in gaming, where AMD has built a major advantage with its cache-focused designs.
For now, treat these numbers as leaked information, not confirmed specifications.
