For years, Linux has remained a favorite choice among developers, servers, and technology enthusiasts, but it has never reached a major share of the desktop market. Recent reports claimed that Linux finally crossed the 10% mark among desktop users in North America. However, new analysis suggests that this milestone may not show the real picture.

According to July data from StatCounter, Linux reached more than 10% market share in North America, with the United States showing an even higher figure of 11.87%. The global share was reported at 7.51%. These numbers quickly attracted attention, but researchers noticed another unusual trend: outdated versions of Mac OS X also appeared to gain popularity despite no longer receiving official support.

AI agents may have changed the way websites measure operating systems

StatCounter doesnt count individual computers or users. Instead, it analyzes billions of monthly page views from websites using its tracking code. This method means that changes in online traffic patterns can strongly influence the results.

If more AI bots and automated agents visit websites while running on Linux systems, they can increase Linux’s reported share. At the same time, other operating systems appear to lose ground because the statistics always add up to 100%.

Cloudflare Radar provided additional evidence for this theory. The platform detected a rise in Linux traffic, but the increase almost disappeared after removing automated activity and focusing only on human users.

Our expert view

We believe this situation shows how quickly AI is changing digital statistics. Numbers that once reflected human behavior can now be influenced by automated systems. For you, this means market share reports require more careful interpretation. A sudden rise does not always mean millions of people have switched platforms overnight.
