OpenAI is considering creating its own AI chips or purchasing a manufacturer

OpenAI, the developer of GPT language models along with the famous chat bot ChatGPT, is considering the creation of its own chips for AI. The reason for that is that the current chips available on the market are scarce while the prices are high.

OpenAI is already considering different options for solving the problem, such as establishing closer cooperation with manufacturers or creating its own chips.

The CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman mentioned the problem, pointing out that roughly 80% of the graphic processor market is controlled by NVIDIA with appropriate chips being now in deficit.

Currently, the operation of ChatGPT costs a lot for the company. With each request costing around 4 cents, the company will have to invest $48,1 billion into new graphic processors.

For this reason, purchasing a manufacturer company may seem like a valid option that the company is considering. Besides that, OpenAI is currently testing new AI chips that are being developed by Microsoft.

Nevertheless, which approach the OpenAI will eventually opt for is not yet clear for the company itself, since neither option is guaranteed to work out.
