Phison introduced its new SSD controller, the PS5028-E28, back in January. While no retail drives with it are available yet, early benchmarks already show impressive advantages over the top SSDs of 2025.

Tom’s Hardware exclusively received benchmark results of an engineering sample using the E28. It was tested against popular SSDs — Acer Predator GM9000, Micron 4600, and Samsung 9100 Pro — in PCMark 10, which simulates real-world tasks like launching apps, gaming, and copying files.

Phison E28 crushes the competition

The results show that the E28 is 18% faster than the Samsung 9100 Pro and the Micron 4600. It even outpaced the Acer Predator GM9000 by 32%. The test measured overall system performance, bandwidth, and average access times.

The E28 performed especially strongly in random read and write tasks: 36% faster reads and 15% faster writes than its closest competitors. Despite similar sequential specs, it even outperforms the latest Samsung (Presto) and Silicon Motion (SM2508) controllers.

SSDs with the Phison E28 are expected to launch later this year. If these benchmarks hold up, a new speed standard for SSDs may be approaching.
