Qualcomm has released the first mobile processors built on a 2-nm process – Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and 8 Elite Gen 6. Both variants are breaking the barrier of 5 GHz, and the higher-end version offers exceptional capabilities for video recording, on-device AI, and gaming.
Characteristics of the new chips
Both processors are based on Oryon architecture, with high-performance Prime cores clocked up to 5.0 GHz, 6 performance cores clocked up to 4.0 GHz, and 16 MB of Oryon Flex Cache.
According to Qualcomm, Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 consumes 37% less power and delivers 13% higher CPU performance than Elite Gen 5.
Both platforms have support for UFS 5.0 storage and support up to 24 GB of LPDDR5X/6-5300 memory.
Adreno GPUs now offer access to the dedicated matrix core for AI. Also, a new Adreno Neural Fusion technology for frame generation and image upscaling can significantly improve frame rate without blurring while at the same time minimizing GPU power consumption by up to 40%. The extreme version has 18 MB of dedicated Adreno High Performance Memory.
AI functions directly on smartphone
The company claims that the Hexagon NPU is 33% more energy-efficient and 35% more powerful. A Mixture of Experts with various parts of the model specializing in various sorts of inputs can function on the extreme version directly on the device. Also, the processor supports INT2, INT4, INT8, INT16, FP8, and FP16.
The updated Sensing Hub can now support models with up to 200 million parameters, with almost 20% improved energy efficiency and 85% more computing power.
A smartphone with the Extreme version could record videos at 8K resolution at 60 fps and 4K at 240 fps for materials with super-slow-motion footage.
First smartphones based on the new chips are planned to be unveiled in the upcoming weeks by the leading manufacturers.
