Samsung Focuses on AI Hardware: Chip Shortage Will Continue Until 2027

Samsung has announced record-breaking figures: the profit of its semiconductor division has grown 49 times. However, the company warned of a dangerous shortage created by the AI boom, which will only intensify through 2027.
Record Results and Capacity Shortage
Samsung’s semiconductor department delivered a record profit of 53.7 trillion won ($36.15 billion). This is a noticeable jump compared to last year’s 1.1 trillion won. The company’s total revenue surged by 69% thanks to memory products, which have become scarce due to massive investment in AI infrastructure.
Samsung’s factories are operating at maximum load, and the company officially states that supply is not covering market demand. Building new production capacity requires significant time, and during that period, specifically through 2027, the gap between demand and supply is expected to become even larger than in 2026. In order to secure component deliveries, key customers are already signing multi-year contracts with Samsung.
Technological Breakthroughs and Internal Challenges
Samsung has started mass production of HBM4 chips for NVIDIA’s latest Vera Rubin platform. The company expects to triple HBM sales revenue by the end of the year.
But internal challenges are overshadowing this rapid success. Workers in South Korea are considering a strike over wage levels, threatening “astronomical losses” for production. In addition, the high cost of chips has become a trap for Samsung’s other divisions: mobile business profit fell by 35% due to the sharp rise in component prices for smartphones.
Despite these risks, analysts believe Samsung’s position in the AI race has never been stronger.
