Qualcomm plans to unveil the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro in September. Yet you can already find what appears to be an engineering sample of the Pro model for sale in China.

A seller from Shenzhen is asking only $42 and even offers free shipping. That looks surprisingly cheap, since the commercial price of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro could exceed $300. The explanation is simple. These chips were reportedly removed from test boards, and the seller claims to have a large stock.

Chip Markings Reveal an Interesting Memory Setup

Photos show the marking SM8975-100-BC on the SoC. It suggests that this particular sample works with LPDDR5X memory rather than newer LPDDR6.

Two samples also carry the batch codes FC5528M5 and FX602R8T. These codes can reveal manufacturing and packaging details. The letter F reportedly points to TSMC as the manufacturer.

The package also includes a heat spreader. This design matters because Qualcomm reportedly wants the final chip to support both LPDDR6 and LPDDR5X. Different memory configurations require different FBGA packages, which can limit the physical area available for heat dissipation.

The Future Flagships

Engineering samples may have been available to Qualcomm partners since February 3. Still, you should not treat these chips as final retail silicon. Qualcomm can change specifications before the official September launch.

From our perspective, the early appearance of these samples suggests that manufacturers are already deep into testing next generation flagship phones. For you, this could mean faster product launches and more competition between brands. The bigger question is price. If Qualcomm's newest chip really costs more than $300, smartphone makers may need to raise flagship prices or become more selective with specifications.
