When One Fiber Cut Shook the Internet: The Cloudflare Outage Reached the World
11:25, 23.06.2026
An internet disruption was experienced on June 22, when the biggest infrastructure provider in the world was hit by a major service disruption. The problem was caused by Cloudflare, which provides network services to numerous websites and platforms all over the world.
More than 70 countries have reported difficulties with accessing websites, social media pages and other cloud-based products. Services such as Discord, Reddit, Canva, Zoom, Fortnite, Robinhood, Microsoft Teams, and X were among those that were having issues.
What Triggered the Global Slowdown
The problem was promptly discovered by Cloudflare, which immediately set about remedying the situation. As Cloudflare said, the disruption of a fiber optic cable caused a failure of network connection in eastern North America. In turn, this led to problems not only at the point of disruption but in other networks linked to the first one.
Thus, Cloudflare stated that the sites that were heavily dependent on the infrastructure from network provider Zayo might face temporary outages. At the same time, users connected via North America and some services located in Europe faced increased latency while Cloudflare was repairing its system.
Finally, Cloudflare stated that the majority of the services have stabilized. Though some intermittent errors occurred, they were few in number and insignificant.
Why This Matters for Every Business
The incident under discussion shows just how interconnected the modern internet is. Even a small local infrastructure problem could impact global users and businesses within minutes. In addition, the incident poses serious questions regarding the issues of redundancy and resilience and the danger of being dependent on too few infrastructure providers.
We believe that cases such as this will push organizations to diversify their technology stacks and improve their disaster recovery plans. Organizations that plan now for infrastructure failures will be better prepared for what might happen tomorrow.
