How to Connect to a Linux Server Using PuTTY?

PuTTY is a free SSH client that you can use to connect to a Linux server from Windows. To establish a connection, you need your server IP address, SSH port, username, and password.

You can find the connection details provided for your server in the Welcome Email.

Note:
These instructions apply to both VPS and Dedicated Servers running Linux.

Download and Install PuTTY

Download PuTTY from the official website and install it on your Windows computer.

Connect to Your Server

  1. Open PuTTY.
  2. In the Host Name (or IP address) field, enter your server IP address or hostname.
  3. In the Port field, enter the SSH port provided in your Welcome Email.
  4. Make sure SSH is selected as the connection type.
  5. Click Open.

Accept the Server Host Key

When connecting to the server for the first time, PuTTY may display a security warning about the server host key.

Verify that you are connecting to the correct server and accept the host key to continue. PuTTY will store the key for future connections.

Log In to Your Server

  1. When the terminal window opens, enter the username provided for your server and press Enter.
  2. Enter your password and press Enter.

Note:
The password is not displayed while you type it. You will not see characters, dots, or asterisks. This is normal behavior for SSH password authentication.

After successful authentication, you will have command-line access to your Linux server.
