How to save ping and traceroute results?

Ping and traceroute are basic network diagnostic tools that can help identify connectivity, latency, and routing issues between your computer and a server.

If you contact HostZealot Support about a network problem, you may be asked to provide ping or traceroute results. You can save these results to a text file and attach it to your support ticket.

Windows

Save Ping Results

  1. Open the Start menu, search for Command Prompt, and open it.
  2. Run the following command:
    ping -n 20 server_ip > ping.txt
  3. Replace server_ip with the IP address or hostname you want to test.
  4. After the test is complete, the results will be saved to ping.txt in the current directory.

Save Traceroute Results

In the same Command Prompt window, run:

tracert server_ip > tracert.txt

Replace server_ip with the IP address or hostname you want to test. When the test is complete, the results will be saved to tracert.txt in the current directory.

macOS

Save Ping Results

  1. Open Terminal.
  2. Run the following command:
    ping -c 20 server_ip | tee ping.txt
  3. Replace server_ip with the IP address or hostname you want to test.

The ping results will be displayed in Terminal and saved to ping.txt in the current directory.

Save Traceroute Results

Run the following command:

traceroute server_ip | tee traceroute.txt

The results will be displayed in Terminal and saved to traceroute.txt in the current directory.

Linux

Save Ping Results

Open Terminal and run:

ping -c 20 server_ip | tee ping.txt

Replace server_ip with the IP address or hostname you want to test. The results will be displayed in Terminal and saved to ping.txt in the current directory.

Save Traceroute Results

Run:

traceroute server_ip | tee traceroute.txt

The results will be displayed in Terminal and saved to traceroute.txt in the current directory.

Note:
The traceroute utility may not be installed by default on some Linux distributions. If the command is not available, install the traceroute package using your distribution's package manager.

Send the Results to HostZealot Support

Attach the generated text files to your support ticket and include a short description of the network problem you are experiencing. This information can help our Support team diagnose connectivity and routing issues more efficiently.
