How to Transfer Files to a Windows Server via RDP?
You can transfer files between your local computer and a Windows server during an RDP session without using a separate file transfer service.
Note:
These instructions apply to both VPS and Dedicated Servers running Windows.
Transfer Files Using Copy and Paste
The simplest way to transfer files is to copy them on your local computer and paste them into the desired location on the remote Windows server.
- Connect to your Windows server via RDP.
- Copy the file or folder on your local computer.
- Open the desired location on the remote Windows server.
- Paste the file or folder.
On Windows, you can use Ctrl + C to copy and Ctrl + V to paste.
When connecting from macOS using Windows App, you can use the familiar Mac shortcuts Command + C and Command + V to copy and paste files between your Mac and the remote Windows server.
What to Do If Copy and Paste Does Not Work
First, make sure clipboard sharing is enabled in your RDP client.
If clipboard sharing is enabled but copy and paste still does not work, restart the RDP Clipboard Monitor process on the remote Windows server:
- Open Task Manager.
- Find RDP Clipboard Monitor or rdpclip.exe and end the process.
- In Task Manager, click File and select Run new task.
- Enter rdpclip.exe and click OK.
Try copying and pasting the file again after the process has restarted.
