Operating systems and Firmware are the major types of software in computing; each of them has a specific role. Both these types of software are so different in terms of their purpose and the way in which they control and manage hardware.

Firmware is considered to be simpler and just helps the device to function, whereas the OS is more complex, with the help of which users can interact with their devices. Here is the article. We will dive deeper into the explanation of these types of software and their major differences.

What is Firmware?

Firmware is a type of operating system that has more generic and lower-level control over the functions of the machine. It may be compared with the bridge that is between the higher-level software and the physical hardware.

Firmware is code in the hardware, and initially, this term appeared in 1967. Here are a couple of the major factors about this type of software, so you will have a better understanding:

  • It is written in assembly language and is created with low-level code. Firmware is necessary for the execution of the most basic functions, and it is stored on the non-volatile memory.
  • It can command both secondary and primary memory. The process functions in such a way that during booting, firmware sends commands to RAM to get access to the OS codes, and another command is sent to ROM.
  • The firmware that is stored in ROM is permanent, and its functions cannot be changed, so a replacement is not possible. Also, it may be stored in EPROM. However, most of the firmware today is not permanent, because it is stored on flash memory.
  • Various types of firmware are used on various processors because they perform different tasks.

When the systems start, the first thing that is activated is the firmware, which sends specific commands to the hardware. A great example of firmware is BIOS, and when the machine is switched on, it checks whether the hardware is properly functioning. After that, the OS loads into RAM. As for the latest firmware that is used, it is called EFI.

Among the devices that use firmware, we can specify ovens, mobiles, computers, cameras, dishwashers, and many others.

What is an Operating System?

The operating system is the first thing that is loaded by BIOS when your machine is switched on. It is stored in the hard disk and manages the general components of the machines. With the help of the operating system, all the other apps are executed on the machine. Users interact with the OS via GUI or CLI.

Due to the operating system, users can perform lots of tasks within the same time frame. For instance, it is possible to control various external drivers, perform some tasks connected with the memory/file management, and use output/input operations. Each OS consists of a shell and a kernel. The kernel is responsible for the interactions with the hardware, whereas the shell is an interface between the kernel and the end user.

Here are some types of OSs:

  • Time-sharing.
  • Batch.
  • Network.
  • Distributed.
  • Real-time.

Among the most popular examples of OSs are such as Linux, Windows, Unix, and Mac.

Only a couple of files are used because it is only responsible for the completion of the single task.
A huge number of files, because various functions should be performed.
Code
Usage of specific code that could not be updated.
Usage of more lines of code and it more flexible in terms of updates.

Summing up

Firmware can be characterized as a type of software that is necessary for the guidance of the hardware to execute certain tasks. Whereas an operating system is a more complex software that functions like an interface between the software and hardware.
