Amazon plans to finance a huge project 960-megawatt nuclear power plant’s construction. The company is going to be the first customer of the generated electricity. The supplier of the reactors will be X-energy, and the plant will be operated by American Electric Power.
Insights regarding the new project
The nuclear plant will consist of 12 small modular reactors, Xe-100 type, and will be located south of Terre Haute, Indiana. This is considered to be the second commercial agreement between X-energy and Amazon.
Amazon invested almost $500 million in X-energy almost 2 years ago for the construction of its own power plants. The company is planning the construction of a couple of new power plants with a total capacity of 5 gigawatts by 2039.
The realization of such ambitious plans depends on the launch of X-energy's first nuclear power plant in Texas. Construction of this project has not yet started; it is at the final stage of obtaining a construction permit.
Lots of experts consider that small modular reactors can gradually pull the nuclear industry out of the crisis. All the recently built nuclear power plants in the U.S. were dealing with serious delays and budget overruns. That’s why the minimization of the reactor size can positively impact on the cost optimization.
