ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT), China’s top domestic DRAM producer, is stepping up to compete with major players like Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron. The company is shifting its focus from DDR4 to more advanced memory technologies, including DDR5 and HBM3.

According to a report from DigiTimes, CXMT has already halted DDR4 production and plans to officially phase it out by the end of Q1 2025. The company has big ambitions — it aims to produce 280,000 wafers per month by the end of 2025, with the potential to reach 300,000, roughly 15% of global DRAM output.

Challenges and Future Potential

Although the move to DDR5 is strategic, early testing shows the technology still has a way to go. First-quarter 2025 samples reportedly fell short in performance and failed to qualify for use by a local memory module maker, who turned to South Korean alternatives instead. Performance issues under high temperatures also limit the appeal of CXMT’s DDR5 in the consumer market.

Despite these hurdles, CXMT is expected to make significant improvements before the end of the year. At the same time, the company is investing in HBM3 development, a key technology for AI servers and data centers. With HBM2 already in use, CXMT aims to supply high-bandwidth memory for Chinese tech giants like Huawei.

If successful, CXMT could shake up the global memory market and reduce China’s dependence on foreign DRAM suppliers.
