CXMT Starts Mass Production of Fifth-Generation DRAM

China’s largest memory manufacturer, ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT), has officially announced the start of mass production of fifth-generation DRAM chips. The company describes this development as a major milestone that will allow China to compete directly with global market leaders such as Samsung, SK hynix, and Micron.

Key Achievements
CXMT has managed to reduce the distance between data storage elements to 11.95 nm. The elements are positioned closely together, which is made possible by the self-aligned quadruple patterning (SAQP) process, in which manufacturing steps are repeated to create ultra-fine structures.
The new platform also enables at least 50% more chip dies to be produced from a single silicon wafer compared with the fourth generation.
First Products on the New Platform
Alongside the platform announcement, CXMT introduced two 24-Gbit LPDDR5X memory chips, which can hold 50% more data than the previous generation. The chips are designed for use in smartphones, tablets, and other portable electronic devices.
