French semiconductor company SiPearl recently announced the first sample of the Rhea 1 processor, which Bull will integrate into the European supercomputer JUPITER.
Insights about the Rhea 1
At this stage of development, the process mainly focuses on creating a blade module for JUPITER that complements the GPU segment, enabling full modular integration of the entire system.
As for some of Rhea 1’s features, it is equipped with 4 DDR5 memory channels, HBM2e memory stacks (64 GB), and 80 Arm Neoverse V1 (Zeus) cores. In addition to this, there is support for 104 PCIe 5.0 lanes.
Due to these characteristics, the new server processor can cope with the most resource-intensive HPC tasks while guaranteeing a high level of flexibility, efficiency, and security. It is planned to be released at the end of this year.
This processor is specifically oriented toward projects that require access to a large amount of data mainly because of its high memory bandwidth.
The first European supercomputer is now located at the Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ) supercomputing center in Jülich, Germany. The second European exascale-class system is planned to be installed at the CEA/DAM center south of Paris, and it will be running on Rhea 2.
