From Store Shelves to Factory Floors: Why Consumer SSDs Are Losing Ground
13:13, 18.06.2026
The consumer SSD market is going through a dramatic shift. According to Nelson Duann, Vice President of Silicon Motion, retail SSD sales have almost vanished during the first half of 2026. Speaking at Computex 2026, he explained that SSD controllers are still selling in large volumes, but they are no longer ending up where you might expect.
Instead of powering drives aimed at consumers, these controllers are increasingly finding their way into SSDs built for major PC manufacturers. Companies such as Acer, Asus, Dell, and HP now rely heavily on ODM suppliers to secure storage components for their systems.
NAND Shortages Are Reshaping the Industry
The main reason behind this change is a growing shortage of NAND flash memory for the client PC market. Memory manufacturers have shifted much of their production toward data centers that support artificial intelligence infrastructure.
As a result, PC brands struggle to obtain enough NAND chips and SSDs directly from memory suppliers. To keep production lines moving, they turn to ODM manufacturers that traditionally focused on retail products. These suppliers now dedicate a much larger share of their output to OEM customers.
This shift has transformed the entire SSD ecosystem. Products that once targeted enthusiasts and upgraders are increasingly being absorbed into prebuilt systems before they ever reach store shelves.
Winners, Losers, and What Comes Next
The redistribution of NAND supply has created both challenges and opportunities across the storage industry. Companies that develop SSD controllers, including Silicon Motion and Phison, continue to benefit from rising demand for server and enterprise storage solutions.
In our view, consumers may face fewer SSD choices and less aggressive pricing in the near future. At the same time, growing investments in AI infrastructure could accelerate innovation in storage technologies. If this trend continues, you may see a market where enterprise demand shapes the products that eventually reach everyday users.
