Recently, new details regarding the Intel Z990 chipset were revealed by LC Tech Leaks and Jaykihn. According to the recently shared information, the new chipset will feature a Z990 PCH package with measurements of 25×24 mm. The package area will be approximately 8.8% smaller than in the Z890.
Additional Intel Z990 Information
The same inside sources believe that stated power consumption of 14 W is very realistic for the future Z990, but only with the full PCIe 5.0 configuration. In the standard configuration, the consumption could be somewhere around 7.9 W.
If the information is confirmed, Z970 can be closer to Z890 with an approximate base power of 6.4 W. Whereas Z990 will be faster and more powerful. There is also information that Intel is planning to split the upcoming desktop platform into Z970 and Z990 chipsets.
Most likely, that revealed motherboard is from GIGABYTE. Such motherboards support three PCIe 5.0 x4 SSDs and three additional PCIe 4.0 SSDs. The total number of PCIe lanes on Z990 should be 48, while 12 of them are PCIe from the chipset. There is also a noticeable 8-pin CPU power connection, which means a new motherboard is generally oriented towards higher power consumption.
Also, there are 4 USB-C ports as well as 8 USB-A ports and 2 Gigabit Ethernet+ ports. Standard connectors include analog and digital ports, Wi-Fi connector, and HDMI 2.1.
