Joomla 6.0 Released with New Automatic Updates
12:35, 16.10.2025
On October 14, 2025, Joomla 6.0 was officially presented, marking the transition of Joomla 5 into maintenance mode. It’s important to note that the transition to Joomla 6 is not considered a migration but rather an update, which simplifies the process for administrators.
The new version introduces numerous improvements aimed at enhancing performance, security, and speed.
Key Improvements
- Automatic core updates. Starting with versions 5.4 and 6.0, the CMS now supports a TUF-based system for automatic core updates. This helps improve security and provides better control over update configurations.
- Cassiopeia template improvements. The Cassiopeia template now includes an additional theme called Cassiopeia Extended with new colors and fonts, allowing greater CSS design customization.
- New backward compatibility plugin 6. This plugin ensures a smoother transition for extensions from Joomla 5 to Joomla 6 by preserving legacy PHP classes.
- New “Notes” field and enhanced tag management (installation and removal) for Joomla content.
- Improved field versioning system.
- Visual enhancements. Default templates now include the View Transition API for smoother page transitions.
More than 200 pull requests have been merged into the CMS core, most of them introducing new XML field types, extended thumbnail generation capabilities, and updated REST API filtering parameters.
