NSS technology from ARM: neural resolution scaling

Starting in 2026, neural supersampling technology will be integrated into processors. An AI computing unit will be used to power NSS.

Resolution scaling technology

Recently, ARM shared details about resolution scaling technology for low-end devices. This year, the company also announced Accuracy Super Resolution (ASR).

The integration of NPU accelerators with new ARM chips is planned for 2026, which will guarantee 10 TOPS/W for neural loads. NSS technology will be able to scale images to 1080p in just 4 ms per frame. This will minimize the load on the graphics processor by almost half.

The new NSS technology will mainly affect fine geometry, shadow processing, and image clarity. The technology is based on ASR and uses INT8 quantization to accumulate information through training. 

The Neural Graphics Development Kit is available for developers. Some partners are already working with it, among them NetEase, Epic Games, Sumo Digital, and Tencent.
