Powering the AI Boom: Massive Data Center Projects Reshape the UK and US
13:16, 03.11.2026
A new level is being set to the competition for building AI infrastructure. The UK and the USA are witnessing big investments from leading companies for building large data centers. The truth that emerges out of all this is that the future of artificial intelligence requires not only technological advancements, but also land and electricity.
Billions in Investment Put the UK at the Center of AI Infrastructure
Energy firm Drax of Britain is working together with Brookfield and AI infrastructure platform Radiant to create a data center near its electricity generating station in North Yorkshire. The planned data center could have a capacity of more than 1 GW and investment in it could be in excess of £20 billion.
The first stage of this project is planned to start operations in the early part of 2028, depending on necessary approval processes.
The project could also strengthen the long term future of Drax's power station, especially as its current subsidy scheme approaches expiry in 2031.
Google's Virginia Plans Highlight the Growing Demand for Space and Power
On the other hand, Google is investigating the potential for a 1.2 GW data center complex on about 1,000 acres in Goochland County, Virginia. The planned location lies inside the West Creek Business Park, although Google is still performing its due diligence.
This investment opportunity has already garnered the interest of local citizens who are worried about noise, pollution, and alterations to their environment. This is evidence that big investments in infrastructure have their upsides and downsides.
Our Perspective
We believe these projects signal a major shift in how companies approach AI infrastructure. Energy access and suitable land are becoming just as important as computing technology itself. For the wider industry, this could increase competition for grid capacity, accelerate investment in power infrastructure, and create new opportunities for energy providers.
