Radical Windows renewal with AI agents functioning alongside the user

In the coming months, Microsoft is planning to transform Windows radically. The plan is to utilize AI agents alongside the regular users so that Copilot will have owner permission to access local files and all the recent activity for the completion of the needed tasks.
Key insights into the new project
The security of AI agents will be based on Microsoft Execution Containers (MXC). Such an approach can help with the isolation of the environment for AI agents during their functioning. Windows offers access to various levels of isolation at the level of virtual machines, individual processes, Windows 365, or WSL. MXC support is already available for LM Studio, GitHub Copilot, OpenAI Codex, Replit, OpenClaw, OpenShell, and others. Also, the Muse AI agent from Meta is soon to be released.
The computation processes are distributed between the cloud and the computer, and this concept is called “hybrid intelligence”. For the functioning of the local models, Windows ML will be utilized for the allocation of resources across GPU, CPU, and neural processors. There is also intelligent routing available for choosing between cloud-based and local models.
On AI-enabled PCs, Copilot could review file content, recent PC activities, and perform such tasks as troubleshooting, diagnostics, accessing local AI, and more. Autopilot AI agent would function constantly.
Core Windows features are being updated. The search app on the taskbar can now perform tasks without even opening settings. Copilot will be available in search so users can get the answers without even launching the Copilot app.
