At Computex 2025, Realtek revealed a new lineup of 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) chips that could make ultra-fast networking more affordable and widespread. Until now, 10GbE was mostly used in servers or by tech enthusiasts due to high costs. But Realtek aims to change that.
The new RTL8127 chip supports speeds from 10Mbps to 10Gbps and uses less than 2 watts of power. It connects via PCIe 4.0 x1, making it suitable for modern desktop motherboards. A more advanced version, the RTL8127AP, is designed for servers and supports remote management via DASH 1.2.
For specialized needs, Realtek offers the RTL8127ATF for fiber connections and the RTL8127AT for copper. These versions don’t support slower 10/100Mbps speeds but focus on high-speed performance with low power use. Both connect via PCIe Gen 3 x2 or Gen 4 x1, which may limit compatibility with older boards.
USB and Networking Gear Ready for 10Gb
Realtek also introduced the RTL8159, a USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 Ethernet controller. It allows full 10Gbps speeds through a standard USB port. Several prototypes were shown, with final versions expected soon.
Additionally, Realtek showcased a new 10GbE PHY chip for switches, routers, and SFP+ to RJ45 adapters. This could help bring 10Gb networking to budget-friendly devices.
While pricing isn’t final, Realtek hinted these chips will be less than twice the price of 5GbE models. This means we might see 10GbE network cards for under $50. The first motherboards with RTL8127 and standalone adapters are expected by late 2025.
