Record data transmission speed of over 51 Tbits per second achieved via hollow optical cable

Recently, Chinese researchers revealed a new fundamental change in fiber-optic technology. Now, ultra-fast data transmission is possible over extensive distances without the use of signal repeaters. The first test has successfully demonstrated that a hollow-core data transmission system can achieve a speed of 1.2 Tbit/s per wavelength.
The national research initiative that is currently working on this project includes such companies as Yangtze Optical Fibre, China Telecom, Dekoli, and Cable Joint Stock. The test was conducted on the longest cross-border hollow optical fiber cable. Researchers achieved an exceptional total throughput of 51.3 Tbit per second over a 128-mile distance.
Increase of network bandwidth and Minimization of latency
When compared with standard fiber-optic cables, the hollow-core fiber can significantly minimize the signal latency and improve transmission capacity. That’s why this new technology is considered to be a great choice for the large data centers and backbone infrastructure.
This technology was already tested outside of the lab conditions and has proven its effectiveness. A team of researchers used adaptive rate control mechanisms together with flexible channel power allocation across the entire system. The usage of a more dynamic setup means that the system can function in more efficient conditions.
Peculiarities of the new amplifier architecture
A new and more powerful amplifier design is based on the multi-element doping and cascaded architecture. Such an approach guarantees higher stability and efficiency under high-power conditions. The system achieved a maximum output power of 33.5 dBm, which directly impacts the reliability of the entire fiber-optic system.
Also, the new system has additional safety mechanisms such as anomaly detection, automatic shutdown functions, and alarm response mechanisms. Such precautions are directly impacting the protection level and guarantee immediate reaction to abnormal conditions of functioning.
