  • The US Chip Chain Expands Around Apple
  • Devices in Texas, But Not iPhones
  • Our take

Last year Apple told the US president it would invest up to $600 billion in America over the next four years. In 2026, you will see one clear slice of that commitment in action. Apple plans to buy more than 100 million chips from TSMC that come specifically from TSMC’s Arizona site.

Apple’s global procurement chief, David Tom, explained that Apple will take as many US made TSMC chips as supply allows. Still, you should not expect an overnight shift away from Asia. Most Apple components will keep coming from Asian factories this year. At the same time, Apple already spends billions in the US on items you might not think about. Think glass panels from Kentucky, rare earth magnet recycling in California, and semiconductor parts produced in Texas.

The US Chip Chain Expands Around Apple

TSMC’s second Arizona plant should be ready to produce chips this year, with a third planned for 2030. Industry logic says Arizona would need at least six fabs to match Taiwan’s scale. TSMC also aims to bring 2 nm production to the US by 2030, while Taiwan already runs that level today under strict export controls.

Meanwhile, Amkor Technology will build two Arizona facilities for packaging and testing. The first should launch next year. That shift matters because it reduces the need to ship wafers back to Taiwan for finishing.

Devices in Texas, But Not iPhones

Apple will start US assembly with simpler products, including Mac mini lines in Texas by year end. You will not see iPhone assembly in the US soon. Apple remembers the Mac Pro lessons from 2013, including workforce and infrastructure challenges. Foxconn plans a training center in Texas this year to raise local skills.

Our take

We believe this move slowly stabilizes supply chains and nudges the industry toward more regional production. Over time, you may feel it through better resilience during global disruptions, and potentially faster rollout of certain components. Prices might not drop, but predictability could improve.
