Qualcomm introduced Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, a more affordable version of the top-of-the-line 8 Elite Gen 5 processor. The new chip is significantly lower in price, yet retains the key features of the higher-end solution. Certain differences relate to some simplifications in configuration and operation at a lower frequency.
Features of Snapdragon 8 Gen 5
When comparing Gen 5 and Gen 3, the new version shows a 36 percent increase in CPU performance, as well as an increase in GPU performance. In addition, there have been significant changes in energy efficiency.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 operates based on 6 powerful cores, which are limited to a frequency of 3.32 GHz. Two Prime cores operate at a frequency of 3.8 GHz, which is slightly lower than in Elite. Overall, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 looks slightly weaker than the Elite, but the real results will be clear when actually used on smartphones.
The Snapdragon X80 modem supports lower 5G speeds, while Ultra Wideband support remains the same as in the Elite. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi operate at the same level, while Adreno graphics and Hexagon NPU have lower specifications. Also, the chip does not support UFS 4.1 flash memory.
Other features, such as display support, charging, and camera capabilities, are fully consistent with the Elite version. Smartphones such as Vivo, Motorola, and OnePlus will be released based on this device.
