Sony is likely to delay PlayStation 6, Musk plans to build a DRAM factory: memory shortage is growing
14:07, 17.02.2026
Large companies are buying up available memory, and the industry is struggling to keep up with production volumes. In January alone, one type of DRAM rose in price by almost 75%. As a result, Musk announced that Tesla would be forced to launch its own memory production plant. Sony, in turn, plans to postpone the release of the new PlayStation until 2028.
Construction of AI data centers
Most companies are facing significant consequences due to the construction of AI data centers. Amazon and Alphabet are planning to spend approximately $185 billion on infrastructure. AI accelerators require large amounts of memory, which is why companies such as Micron and Samsung are starting to use high-margin HBM, and DRAM is becoming increasingly rare.
The consequences are already being felt throughout the chain. Cisco has lost its market capitalization, Lenovo has announced a crisis, and most Chinese companies (Oppo, Xiaomi) are cutting back on their shipment plans.
Analysts say that the gap between supply and demand for DRAM is only 4%, but the real imbalance is likely to be much higher. Building new capacity, however, could take years.
