The AI Infrastructure Race: Faster Connections, Smarter Data Centers
12:15, 14.10.2026
The development of AI requires powerful processors and a robust network that can transmit massive data volumes between computational nodes. As AI factories expand, connectivity has become a critical challenge.
The Hidden Technology Powering the AI Boom
Marvell is tackling this problem with new connectivity chips. Its 3.2T Alaska E re-timer facilitates high-speed connections between the accelerators and switches; the second generation 1.6T Alaska A DSP offers enhanced capability for active electrical cables. Based on the 3nm technology, the new DSP offers the ability to extend the range of copper cables beyond six meters, besides being more power-efficient.
The alternative approach is taken by NVIDIA and Cisco in addressing the issue. The upcoming Ultra Dense Small Form Factor Pluggable (USFP) optical modules are expected to support 400Gb/s per lane or total bandwidth of 12.8 Tbs. In comparison to the currently used 200Gb/s per lane optical modules, the USFP will provide four times the bandwidth and 1.3 times the power efficiency.
Why Better Connectivity is So Important
All the above-mentioned developments address different parts of the same issue. Marvell works on fast electrical interconnect solutions while NVIDIA and Cisco try to increase the bandwidth capacity of optical networking. Perhaps, all these innovations together may become the key to energy-efficient processing of AI loads in data centers without additional network congestions and latency.
The view of the expert is that the success of AI in the future would increasingly depend on connectivity. More effective network solutions would allow faster access to the internet and lower cost of implementing AI solutions for businesses. Yet, practical advantages would largely depend on implementation costs and effectiveness of technologies in the full-fledged system.
