AI and Code: Revolutionizing Development, But Not Replacing Developers
15:52, 17.10.2025
СEO of Anthropic, Dario Amodei, revealed that AI now generates up to 90% of the code in the company. The AI model, Claude, handles most of the development tasks, automating much of the routine coding work. Amodei was quick to clarify, though, that this doesn't mean engineers are becoming obsolete. In fact, quite the opposite. The automation process allows developers to focus on the more complex 10% of the code, dealing with tough logic, debugging, and the coordination of AI systems. This change doesn't reduce the need for human input; it increases the team's productivity.
More Developers, Not Fewer
Amodei says that this is a misunderstanding. As AI takes over routine tasks, engineers are free to solve higher-level problems and optimise AI-generated code. A boost in productivity is achieved through this redistribution of tasks. Amodei asserts that the role of developers is undergoing a metamorphosis, rather than being consigned to obsolescence. With the help of AI, they can now accomplish far more, allowing them to focus their expertise on more intricate aspects of the project.
The Risk of Overselling AI
AI-generated code is impressive. But it is not without its drawbacks. For now, it's primarily suitable for routine tasks, i.e. work that doesn't require creativity or deep problem-solving. The notion of placing one's entire reliance on artificial intelligence for coding purposes remains, to be candid, somewhat questionable. As AI continues to develop, it may be a while before we see it handling truly complex and creative coding tasks, which are more challenging to automate. For the time being, human developers are still vital for anything more complex than the most basic code.
