  • Clean Energy Would Need a Much Bigger AI Boost
  • How AI’s Energy Choices Could Affect All of Us

When you think about AI and climate change, data centers probably come to mind first. Their servers consume huge amounts of electricity. Yet researchers suggest that this is only part of the story.

AI has become an important tool for oil and gas companies. It can help them locate new reserves, plan drilling more efficiently, and extract more fuel from existing fields. Major technology companies even have teams focused specifically on the fossil fuel industry.

This means AI can affect emissions long after the servers finish processing their calculations.

Clean Energy Would Need a Much Bigger AI Boost

Researchers tested 64 scenarios showing how AI could improve productivity across fossil fuels, renewable energy, and other parts of the energy sector.

The results were striking. When AI improved fossil fuel and renewable energy production by similar amounts, global emissions still increased. Renewable energy would need four to five times more AI driven productivity gains to offset the additional emissions linked to fossil fuel production.

The researchers found that emissions declined only in scenarios where technology companies stopped supporting fossil fuel extraction entirely.

How AI’s Energy Choices Could Affect All of Us

The study uses economic modelling, so its results are estimates rather than measurements of AI’s real world climate impact. Still, the scale deserves attention. In some scenarios, indirect emissions linked to AI could be several times larger than the emissions created by data centers themselves.

You should not judge AI’s environmental footprint only by how much electricity a model consumes. You also need to look at what that technology helps companies produce. AI can accelerate clean energy, but it can just as easily make fossil fuel extraction cheaper and more profitable.
