AMD AM6: A New Socket with PCIe 6.0 and DDR6 Without Changing Dimensions
11:49, 08.08.2025
AMD is preparing a new generation of processor sockets, AM6, which, according to the Italian publication Bits and Chips, will have more than 2,100 pins, which is 22% more than AM5. At the same time, the physical dimensions of the socket will remain almost the same, which will allow the use of AM5 coolers.
Support of Future Standards
The AM6 platform will be AMD's first to support PCIe 6.0 and DDR6 memory. The new connector is designed for Zen 7 architecture processors, which are expected to launch alongside DDR6.
As with the transition to AM5, the company will keep the processor package size (40×40 mm) the same, optimizing the layout of components and the shape of the heat spreader to increase contact density without losing space under the cover.
Long-Term Strategy
AMD promises support for AM5 until at least the end of 2025, and AM4 continues to receive new processors even after 10 years. Analysts expect AM6 to also become a long-life platform, maintaining compatibility with future generations of CPUs.
