AMD will use FRED in future Epyc and Ryzen processors
13:49, 05.02.2026
AMD recently published technical documentation stating that future processor architectures will be based on FRED (Flexible Return and Event Delivery) technology. The company plans to replace IDT technology, which has been used in x86 architecture since 1982.
Features of the new technology
Both systems control signal processing at the hardware level. With IDT, software developers had to control certain stages to eliminate possible conflicts manually. The new technology works on the principle of a single optimized operation, thus reducing processor cycles. As a result, system performance can be increased.
FRED has already been approved and implemented in Intel Panther Lake mobile processors. However, a significant performance increase will only be available after updating the system components and core.
It is not yet clear in which generation of Zen architecture support for the new technology will be available. The changes are expected to be introduced with Zen 6, but official confirmation is not expected until late 2026.
