Apple is testing CXMT memory for MacBooks and iPhones

According to WSJ, Apple is already testing CXMT memory chips with the future intention of their usage in MacBooks and iPhones for the Chinese market.

Risks connected with the memory purchase

The major issue related to the memory purchase is authorization from U.S. authorities. However, Apple expects to receive such permission soon.

Generally speaking, current U.S. law doesn’t prohibit the purchase of standard memory chips from CXMT, which doesn’t require an additional customization process. However, Apple plans to receive official approval mainly for the safety net in case of possible future changes in the political environment.

The principal benefit of CXMT’s memory is, of course, its price range. According to the insight information, it is also clear that Acer and HP are already using such memory in their devices sold outside the U.S. market.

If agreements between Apple and CXMT are achieved, Apple devices will still require some adaptation to the new specifications. Also, the memory shipment isn’t planned for this year, because the quotas are rather limited.

As for now, CXMT ranks as the fourth company in the world in terms of revenue and controls approximately 7% of the RAM market. Analysts consider that the company can eventually reach the top three RAM manufacturers.
