Colt Tests New Fiber-Optic Technology to Accelerate Network Connections in London

Colt Technology Services has completed a trial of hollow-core fiber (HCF), connecting two of the company's network nodes in central London. The project was carried out in partnership with Relativity Networks and Network Planning Solutions (NPS) to assess whether the technology could be integrated into existing network infrastructure.
Hollow-Core Fiber Could Reduce Latency by 30%
Unlike conventional optical fiber, which transmits light through a solid glass core, HCF uses a hollow channel surrounded by a specialized glass layer. This design allows light to travel faster, potentially reducing data transmission latency.
Relativity Networks says its ChronoCore technology can reduce latency by approximately 30% compared with conventional optical fiber. So, it could become a valuable solution for connecting data centers and network nodes that require fast exchanges of large volumes of data.
Is Commercial HCF Deployment On the Horizon?
The successful London trial demonstrated that ChronoCore can in fact be integrated into an operational network and work under real-world conditions.
Wider deployment, however, will depend on customer demand, implementation costs, and the results of subsequent deployment phases.
