Data Storage Breakthrough: Seagate Launches Mass Production of 44 TB Drives
14:04, 04.03.2026
Demand for high-capacity drives continues to grow amid the development of AI. One of the industry leaders, Seagate, has announced the start of shipping for the Mozaic 4+ hard drive line. These drives are built on HAMR technology and offer a capacity of up to 44 TB each.
About HAMR Technology
HAMR technology is based on the method of Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording. The core of the technology lies in the local heating of magnetic platters, which increases the density of information placement. Seagate is the only manufacturer that has managed to use this technology on an industrial scale.
Looking Ahead: 100 TB Drives
Current technologies allow for recording over 4 TB on a single magnetic platter. However, Seagate engineers see this achievement as just the beginning: in the near future, data recording density could increase to 10 TB per platter. This opens a direct path to creating hard drives with a capacity of 100 TB without a radical change in the physical architecture of the devices.
Benefits of 44 TB Drives
The transition to 44 TB drives brings direct benefits to owners of large data repositories. According to the manufacturer's calculations, replacing old models (30 TB) with new ones in data centers allows for:
- Increasing overall infrastructure efficiency by almost 47%.
- Saving about 10 square meters of usable space.
- Reducing annual electricity consumption by 800,000 kWh.
