Since 2019, when Google demonstrated the superiority of the quantum computer, this topic has become a subject of constant discussion. A rather challenging quantum algorithm could not be simulated on classical systems, so we should only trust the accuracy of the received results.

IBM and quantum computer experiments

IBM has decided to achieve quantum supremacy, so it now has its own quantum processors and computers. Also, there is revealed information regarding three IBM-sponsored research studies, which showed that quantum computers have given relevant results. Because the verification of the quantum computer's answer is almost impossible to achieve, there are other options for verification. For instance, checking the availability of errors in the quantum circuit or repeating the same experiment on various quantum systems.

During the initial experiment, scientists used a system that automatically identified cycles with errors and excluded them from the final sample. Such an approach helped with the minimization of the error rate. As a part of the second experiment, the verification of the final results was conducted on a completely different platform.

In the third study, the investigation was made when propagating quantum information in systems with 56 qubits. Scientists made calculations on several quantum processors with different types of noise. Despite all the conducted experiments, it is challenging to actually define quantum supremacy.

IBM experts believe that simulations cannot be conducted on classical systems, so the verifications are only valid when conducted on quantum platforms themselves.
