AMD is considering a new type of expansion card designed to boost artificial intelligence performance in traditional desktop PCs. According to a report from CRN, Rahul Tikoo, head of AMD’s client CPU division, revealed that the company is exploring the release of a discrete NPU, or neural processing unit, as a standalone add‑on card. This device would handle AI workloads independently, giving desktops a powerful new way to process machine learning tasks.

Tikoo explained that the company wants to be ready if demand grows in this emerging market. He hinted that AMD already has the necessary technologies to bring such a product to market quickly. Similar solutions exist, such as Qualcomm’s Cloud AI 100 Ultra, but those are designed exclusively for large data centers. AMD’s approach could finally bring high‑speed AI acceleration to everyday PC users.

Potential Uses Beyond AI Tasks

A discrete NPU could work alongside other components in a system, creating new opportunities for performance gains. For example, with NVIDIA’s Blackwell GPUs now supporting neural shaders and shifting more workloads to tensor cores, combining a dedicated NPU with a GPU could accelerate neural‑network‑based 3D rendering. It would make the card useful not only for AI computations but also for creative applications and gaming enhancements.

Early Stage but Big Ambitions

The project is still in early discussions, and AMD has not confirmed a release timeline. However, the move signals the company’s intent to expand into desktop AI processing. If successful, such cards could narrow the gap between standard PCs and advanced AI‑ready mobile chips like AMD’s Strix Halo, offering consumers a significant leap in local AI performance.
