12:44, 26.09.2025
xAI has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI in the Northern District of California. According to xAI, OpenAI engaged in targeted poaching of employees in order to gain access to specific information: data center strategies and the Grok source code.
Cause for the lawsuit against OpenAI
The document names two former engineers, Jimmy Fraiture and Xuechen Li. In addition, a senior financial officer is also mentioned in the case. At this stage, it is known that one of the engineers confessed to stealing the code base, while the other transferred this information to personal devices. In total, OpenAI hired at least eight specialists from xAI.
At the end of August, xAI filed a separate lawsuit against Li, and the court restricted his work with generative AI. The new lawsuit is directed at OpenAI and was filed on September 25.
OpenAI has not yet commented on the current situation in the media. The trial is expected to be lengthy, with a possible precedent for the protection of business secrets.
