  • LPDDR6 as a great alternative for data centers
  • Here is a list of additional factors that stand out in LPDDR6:

Low Power DRAM, or LPDRAM, has moved tremendously from its mobile origins to the modern data center architecture. Due to the huge demand from AI workloads and general-purpose computing, memory systems are also becoming important for improved reliability and higher predictability.

LPDDR6 is not just a new version; it introduces a server-relevant architecture. New reliability and efficiency enhancements can support significant capacity scaling.

LPDDR6 as a great alternative for data centers

The changes in LPDDR6 are directly impacting capacity scaling and high performance because of the new architecture. The memory is based on a 24-bit channel architecture with 2 independent 12-bit sub-channels.

The new approach has significantly increased per-pin signaling rates that reach 10.7 Gb/s, and the roadmap scalability can reach 14.4 Gb/s. This factor is impacting the improvement of bandwidth and minimizing PHY scaling pressure.

The availability of x6 sub-channel mode is directly oriented toward the data center requirements. This helps to unlock higher memory capacities per channel and per component. Such an approach also affects coordinated access across several independent sub-channels for the creation of the logical transaction interface.

Among other new improvements, this memory has a longer burst length, and packet formats support 32 bytes per sub-channel transaction, with the possibility of 64-byte aggregation. This directly impacts the minimization of command overhead and the efficiency of cache line-aligned workloads.

Here is a list of additional factors that stand out in LPDDR6:

  • Availability of the minimized core operating voltage and introduction of dual-domain core power supply.
  • Implementation of the dynamic efficiency mode, which allows access based on the minimized I/O activity during low bandwidth demand periods.
  • Introduction of dual-bank refresh command. This is especially crucial when memory capacity scales and refresh overhead becomes a huge problem.

The fact that Meta is choosing this type of memory is a clear indication for the whole industry. Such adoption means that LPDDR6 really reflects the huge recognition of low-power memory. Soon, this alternative can become an essential element alongside DDR and HBM memories.
