Mark Zuckerberg has announced the launch of Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL), a major new division aimed at building cutting-edge AI models and tools. MSL will bring together Meta’s leading AI research teams, including those behind the Llama foundation models and Meta AI, which now serves over a billion users across its platforms.
Leading this new effort is Alexandr Wang, former CEO of Scale AI, who joins Meta as Chief AI Officer. Nat Friedman, ex-CEO of GitHub and a top AI investor, will co-lead MSL, focusing on AI products and applied research.
Superteam of AI Talent
Zuckerberg has recruited an all-star lineup of AI experts from top companies like OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Anthropic. The team includes names behind major AI breakthroughs such as GPT-4o, Gemini, and text-to-image tools like MaskGIT. New hires, including Trapit Bansal, Ji Lin, Huiwen Chang, and Shengjia Zhao, have contributed to numerous state-of-the-art models.
This hiring spree comes amid fierce competition with OpenAI and Google, with some talent reportedly being offered bonuses as high as $100 million.
Next-Gen Models & Meta’s Vision
Meta is already working on improved versions of Llama models, such as Llama 4.1 and 4.2. In parallel, MSL is initiating research on its next-generation models, aiming to reach the AI frontier within the following year.
Zuckerberg believes Meta has the resources, talent, and scale to lead the race toward superintelligence and bring personal AI to everyone.
