Micron’s AI Gold Rush Hits a Labour Roadblock: A Billion-Dollar Factory Faces Uncertainty
14:14, 06.11.2026
As artificial intelligence takes off, there’s a rush to grab more memory chips. While firms are having fun selling their products in increasing quantities and earning more money, employees feel they deserve a larger slice of the pie.
At Micron, there is now a heated dispute with its Taiwanese employees. This could impact the company’s plans of opening up another factory called Fab 11E in Taoyuan.
The project carries an estimated investment of $3 billion to $4.5 billion. Micron plans to produce DRAM and high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips there. Both technologies play a crucial role in AI accelerators and modern data centres. The company originally expected the factory to begin operations in 2028.
However, workers want a permanent bonus system that would give employees 15% of Micron’s operating profits. They also prefer cash payments over stock-based rewards. Micron has already reached an agreement with another Taiwanese union, but the Taoyuan workforce has rejected the proposed terms.
Why This Dispute Could Affect the Global AI Industry
Taiwan continues to play an important role in Micron’s manufacturing plans. Micron currently has 15,000 workers in Taiwan. Local manufacturing plants account for a considerable portion of DRAM and HBM production.
The postponement of the opening of Fab 11E might affect Micron’s plan to compete with Samsung and SK hynix. Moreover, the facility was also planned to be equipped with the latest technology from ASML (Dutch producer).
Micron has confirmed the labour dispute but has not officially announced that construction has stopped. Both sides are expected to continue negotiations with help from Taiwanese authorities.
Our Conclusion
This dispute underscores one of the critical aspects of the AI revolution. The technology sector requires not only cutting-edge machinery and investments worth billions but also qualified employees that will stick with the company.
In case the labor disputes affect the construction of the new manufacturing plants, the consequences will ultimately affect the global memory market. You will probably feel the effect in terms of increased prices of components and computers or AI devices in general.
