  • New Package Manager DNF5
  • GNOME Updates and Nvidia Support
  • Other Important Changes

On October 29, 2024, the Fedora development team introduced the stable version of the Fedora Linux 41 distribution. This version includes updates to Linux kernel 6.11, LLVM 19, and DNF5, along with numerous other significant improvements. Fedora Linux 41 is available in various builds, including Fedora Workstation, Server, Silverblue, IoT, and others.

New Package Manager DNF5

One of the most noticeable changes is the transition to the new package manager DNF5, rewritten in C++. This solution improves performance and reduces the number of dependencies. Another innovation is the implementation of DNF Daemon, which replaces PackageKit and provides more convenient package management in graphical interfaces.

GNOME Updates and Nvidia Support

The GNOME desktop environment has been updated to version 47, bringing a new style of dialog windows and improved hardware acceleration for video recording. Users will also be able to install proprietary Nvidia drivers directly from GNOME Software, greatly simplifying system setup.

Other Important Changes

Other notable changes include the removal of packages related to the deprecated X11 protocol and the transition to the Ptyxis terminal emulator in Fedora Workstation. New editions with KDE Plasma Mobile for mobile devices and an updated LXQt 2.0 build are now available.

Version 41 also introduced support for Intel IPU6 cameras and a new stack for MIPI cameras. Atomic editions of Fedora CoreOS and IoT now utilize the Composefs file system, ensuring greater security and integrity control.

Users will also appreciate hardware acceleration support for AMD GPUs in PyTorch and the updated OpenSSL, which ends trust in SHA-1. The new distribution version also includes "free" and "nonfree" RPM Fusion repositories with multimedia applications and proprietary drivers.

Fedora Linux 41 represents a significant step forward, offering improved performance, security, and a more modern interface for users.
